Modern Explorations of the Colonial Site of Osbornes

In 1996 the Virginia Department of Historic Resources conducted an archaeological survey or the site that was once known as Osbornes (or Gatesville).

It is quite sad to this researcher what an aerial view of the area has to offer today. The souls and the bones of our ancestors surely lie beneath.

Many of the roads and landmarks of Chester, Virginia today still bear the names of Osborne and Coxendale. Henricus, where it is believed Coxendale once stood, is a Historical Park dedicated to reminding the area of what it once was some 350 years ago.

Note the "dogleg" in the powerlines within the survey area. This feature is a key point of reference when researching the area of Henrico and it's plantations. The building that stands in the frame is XPO Logistics, a trucking company. The building was not there when the historical survey of 1996 was conducted. It appears that the artifacts of the settling Osbornes may lie beneath that modern concrete.

Site of 1996 survey. Note again the "dogleg" in the powerlines as a point of reference.
